LOCATION: Bethlehem Municipality, Bethlehem Governorate
The organization Advocates for Human Rights conducts workshops to promote social and human rights for women and youth in remote villages of the Bethlehem governorate. The group targets isolated localities, particularly conservative ones, where women and girls are not allowed to leave the village without the permission of their fathers, husbands or brothers. A challenge that Advocates for Human Rights faced was engaging parents of children with special needs. Culturally stigmatized, these parents are often loath to reach out to the Ministry of Social Affairs for help. The Community Leadership Empowerment Program strategic planning process enabled Advocates for Human Rights and its young volunteers to open a training center serving parents of children with special needs. They have launched an outreach campaign, using radio and TV advertisements.
